Selling an MOT failure in Harringworth
Selling an MOT failure in Harringworth starts with knowing what it is worth as it stands. Put the reg and postcode into our instant price page and you will see a price before you commit to anything. Then you can weigh it against the garage's repair quote.

Fix it or scrap it?
There is no single answer, but a few questions help:
- Is the repair bill more than the car is worth?
- Is the failure on something structural, like corroded sills or chassis rails?
- Has the car got a big mechanical fault, such as the gearbox, clutch or head gasket?
- Were last year's advisories warning about the same problems?
If you answer yes to the first and any of the others, scrapping is often the sensible choice. Our scrap or repair guide goes into more depth.
Small fails are a different story. A blown bulb, a worn wiper or a single tyre is usually worth putting right, and we would rather tell you that than take a car that has years left in it. The cars that suit scrapping are the ones where the list keeps growing and every fix uncovers another job.
It also helps to think about the year ahead. Even if you pay for this year's repairs, an older car with tired suspension and creeping rust is likely to be back on the ramp with a fresh list next time.
Advisories that caught up
A lot of the MOT failures we buy around Harringworth have a history. The car scraped through last year with a list of advisories about rust or worn parts, and this year those advisories became fails. Cars that spend their lives on country lanes, with mud, salt in winter and farm tracks, can see corrosion underneath move on quickly.
Getting a failed car out of the village
A car that has failed on brakes, steering or tyres should not be on the road. A car with an expired MOT generally cannot be driven, except to a pre-booked test. And the lanes around Harringworth are narrow, with a river crossing and limited passing places, so they are no place for an unroadworthy car.
We collect it on a truck. Collections are carried out by Rapid Recovery Corby, George Mitchell's recovery company, so loading a car with poor brakes or a dead battery is routine.
What is my MOT failure worth?
Failing an MOT does not usually make a big difference to scrap value. Here is what does:
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Weight | The biggest factor, as scrap is priced per tonne |
| Scrap metal price | Rises and falls with the market |
| Completeness | Engine, gearbox, catalytic converter and wheels |
| Make and model | Some cars are worth more than their weight |
| Keys and V5C | Make the collection simpler |
For more, see our MOT failure cost guide. The price stands as long as the car is as described. If something is different on the day, we explain it before we load.
No MOT and no tax
If the car is untaxed and kept off the road, it needs a SORN. Once it has been scrapped, the DVLA records that, and a SORN is no longer needed. Any full months of tax left on a taxed car are refunded automatically after scrapping.
What to have ready
- Photo ID, a driving licence or passport.
- Proof of address.
- The V5C logbook if you have it.
- The keys.
If the logbook is missing, read our guide to scrapping without a logbook. Empty the car first, checking the glovebox, door pockets, boot and under the spare wheel. If you have a private plate on it, retain it with the DVLA before collection.
Payment and what happens next
We pay instantly by bank transfer when we collect. Paying cash for scrap cars has been illegal since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013.
The car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues a Certificate of Destruction, normally within 7 days, and notifies the DVLA. Keep the certificate. Cancel your insurance.

Questions people ask
Do you buy MOT failures in Harringworth?
Yes. We buy cars that have failed their MOT as they are and collect them for free.
Should I repair my car or scrap it after an MOT failure?
If the repair costs more than the car is worth, or the failure is on structural rust, the gearbox, clutch or head gasket, scrapping is often sensible.
Can I drive my failed MOT car to you?
There is no need. We collect it on our truck, so it does not have to be driven.
Does an MOT failure reduce the scrap price?
Usually not by much. Scrap value depends mainly on weight, the scrap metal price and whether the car is complete.
Do I need a SORN before scrapping?
If the car is untaxed and off the road, it should have one. Once scrapped, a SORN is not needed.
How will I be paid?
By instant bank transfer when we collect.
