Can I scrap a car without a V5C?
Yes. Missing logbooks are common. They get lost in house moves, thrown out by mistake, or were simply never passed on when the car changed hands. Not having the V5C doesn't stop you scrapping a car legally.
What it does mean is that you need other evidence. A scrap car buyer has to be satisfied that the person selling is who they say they are and has the right to sell the car.

What the V5C normally does
The V5C logbook records the registered keeper of the vehicle. When a car is scrapped with its logbook, you hand the V5C over and keep the small yellow slip, the section for selling to the motor trade. The ATF then issues a Certificate of Destruction and tells the DVLA.
Without the V5C, those last steps still happen. The difference is in the checks at the start.
What you need instead
To scrap a car with no logbook, you will need:
- Photo ID. A driving licence or passport.
- Proof of address. A recent document showing your name and address.
- Proof of ownership. Something that links you to the car.
Proof of ID and address is needed for every sale, logbook or not, because by law we must check the seller's name and address. The extra piece without a V5C is showing that the car is yours to sell.
What counts as proof of ownership
Proof of ownership is anything that reasonably connects you to the vehicle. Depending on your situation, that might include paperwork from when you bought the car, service or repair records in your name, or insurance documents for the car. If you are not sure whether what you have is enough, call or WhatsApp us on 07598 314366 before you book and we will talk it through.
How the process works without a logbook
- Get your instant price. Enter your registration and postcode on our get a price page and your price appears on screen.
- Accept and book. If you are happy with the price, accept it and add your details. George calls to agree a collection time. Tell him then that you don't have the V5C.
- Gather your documents. Have your photo ID, proof of address and proof of ownership ready for collection day.
- Hand the car over. We check your documents, load the car and pay you by bank transfer.
- The car goes to an ATF. The Authorised Treatment Facility issues a Certificate of Destruction and tells the DVLA.
Does having no logbook change the price?
The V5C is one of the factors that can affect a scrap price, because it keeps the paperwork simple. The bigger factors are still the car's weight, the scrap metal market and whether the car is complete. Our scrap car cost guide and our guide to how scrap car prices work explain how these fit together.
The important thing is to tell George the logbook is missing when he calls to book. That way everything is agreed before collection, and there are no surprises on the day.
Selling a relative's car without the logbook
A common situation is a car left after a family member has stopped driving or passed away, and nobody can find the V5C. We know that can be a difficult time. The person selling will need their own photo ID and proof of address, and evidence that they are entitled to sell the car. If you are unsure what that should be in your case, give us a call and we will explain what we need.
Cars that have changed hands without paperwork
Sometimes a car was bought privately and the logbook was never sent, or the previous keeper's details are still on record. You can still sell the car for scrap if you can show it is yours to sell. Be upfront about the history when you speak to us, as it helps us get the paperwork right.
What you should still do
Even without a V5C, the usual steps apply:
- Remove all belongings, including dashcams, sat navs and parking permits.
- Cancel any toll or parking accounts linked to the registration.
- Transfer or retain a personalised plate with the DVLA before the car is scrapped.
- Cancel your insurance after the car has gone.
- Keep the Certificate of Destruction when it arrives.
Our full guide on how to scrap a car legally covers each step.
If the car is on a SORN
Plenty of cars without a logbook have also been off the road for a while with no tax. If the car is kept off the road it should be on a SORN. Once the car is scrapped and the DVLA is told, a SORN is no longer needed. Any full months of tax left on the car are refunded automatically.
Moving a car that has been sitting
Cars with a missing logbook are often cars that have been parked up for a long time. Flat tyres, seized brakes and a dead battery are common. Our collections are carried out with our own recovery trucks from Rapid Recovery Corby, with winches, dollies and skates, so a long-parked car can usually be loaded from a driveway, garage or yard without trouble.
Why legal buyers ask for ID
Some people are surprised by the ID check. It is a legal requirement under scrap metal rules, and it is one of the things that separates a proper buyer from one cutting corners. A buyer who doesn't ask for ID, or who offers cash, is not following the law. We pay by bank transfer and check ID on every collection.
Whether your car is a running car, an MOT failure or a non-runner, the same approach applies. Get your instant price to start.

Questions people ask
Can I scrap my car without a logbook?
Yes. You need photo ID, proof of address and proof of ownership. The car can then be scrapped legally at an ATF.
What ID do I need to scrap a car?
Photo ID such as a driving licence or passport, plus proof of address. Without a V5C you also need proof of ownership.
Will I still get a Certificate of Destruction without a V5C?
Yes. The Authorised Treatment Facility issues a Certificate of Destruction and tells the DVLA once the car is scrapped.
Does having no V5C reduce the price?
It can make a difference, but weight, the scrap market and completeness matter more. Tell George when he calls so everything is agreed before collection.
Can I scrap a family member's car without the logbook?

Should I order a new V5C before scrapping?
